Description
This is a lovely antique French faience polychrome fan-shaped vase decorated with wildflowers, fans and scrolls. It is decorated in the characteristic style of the Desvres decorators (led by the various generations of the Fourmaintraux family). It has a typical Desvres palette of dark blue, pale blue, yellow, green, red, aubergine and brownish black. The vase is divided into two large compartments and two smaller flanking compartments, presumably to strengthen the earthenware construction. It is a good size - about 20.9 cm in width, about 14.7 cm high and about 4.5 cm in depth. There is a monogram on the inside of the base, which represents the decorator. I read it as an italic "FF", together with a small decorator’s mark and the model number 69/7. The FF mark stands for Fourmaintraux Freres, a company which was operated for a very short period (1879-1887) by the brothers Jules and Émile Fourmaintraux. This lovely piece is in very good condition for its age. There are a few small chips on the top rim, some very minor glaze losses on the footrim. There is also a very minor hairline from the top rim, which is quite tight. I have tried to show these clearly in the photos. There are no significant scratches or restoration. And then with the stripes, + since it features a rather canine head, it came to me: this simply is your tasmanian wolf, a thylacine!! Why not - bought this in Australia after all... According!
